Orca Attack is made in 2 weeks for the GDKO2024 Round 2 with the goal to make audio cues essential to the gameplay.

Dive into the underwater world and take on the role of a seaotter searching for food.
Guide your otter skillfully through the waters to snatch fish and chase down crabs, racking up points as you go. But beware! The dreaded orca lurks in the depths, constantly on the prowl for you.

Utilize the seagrass patches as hiding spots to evade the orca, but be quick – the orca is swift and agile.

I drew all sprites myself. The soundeffects and music are from the free game maker bundles, except the otter eating sound and the restart button which are from freesounds.org.

Game-mechanics (read after playing the game):

The Music has different instruments which can be toggled on and off. At first only 2 instruments play, after a short amount of time 2 more instruments get added, which activates the fish spawning. The music feels adventurous, therefor this fits the concept of introducing a new prey. When the first fish is caught, a short harp jingle plays and 2 more instruments get added to the mix, further adding a good feel to the gameplay. The orca announces him with a roar, and the music starts to play drums and bass, to give the player a chance to move to a hiding spot. The auditory feedback gives the moment some action. The goal was to make a short story game out of these concepts, but I ran out of time so I went for the highscore game-loop.
